Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) Resupply Consultation

Running low on your pill? Eligible patients can now get up to 12 months' resupply directly from a Chemistworks pharmacist with no GP visit required.

Get Your Pill Without a GP Appointment

Under the NSW Pharmacist Hormonal Contraception Resupply Service, trained and authorised Chemistworks pharmacists can assess your eligibility and resupply your existing oral contraceptive pill.

This service is designed for people who are already established on the pill and need a resupply. Your pharmacist will conduct a short consultation to confirm your eligibility and that it remains safe for you to continue your current pill.

Simple Steps to Your Resupply

Getting your pill through Chemistworks is straightforward. Here's what to expect:

1

Book Your Consultation

Book a private consultation time at your nearest Chemistworks online, over the phone, or in-store. Try to bring a box of your current pill, a past prescription, or any other record showing what you're taking.

2

Meet With Your Pharmacist

Your pharmacist will ask a few questions about your health, lifestyle, and current medication. They'll also take your blood pressure and record your height and weight. Everything is kept private and secure.

3

Receive Your Resupply

If you meet the eligibility criteria, your pharmacist will supply your pill. This can be up to 12 months for those aged 18-39, or one manufacturer's pack for those aged 40-49. With your consent, your GP will be notified of the consultation.

4

Stay Connected with Your Doctor

This service supplements and doesn't replace your relationship with your GP. It's still important to have regular check-ins with your doctor, especially if anything changes with your health.

Which Pills Can Be Resupplied?

This service covers a select range of low-risk oral contraceptive pills. Pharmacists can resupply the same pill you have been prescribed and they cannot switch you to a different type or brand without your doctor's involvement.

Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC)

Contains both an estrogen and a progestogen hormone.

  • Ethinyloestradiol (40μg or less)
  • Levonorgestrel
  • Norethisterone
  • Drospirenone (single ingredient only)

Progestogen-Only Pill (POP / Mini-Pill)

Contains only a progestogen hormone and is often preferred by those who can't take estrogen.

  • No estrogen content
  • Suitable for breastfeeding mothers (confirm with your doctor)
  • May be preferable if you have certain health conditions
Please note: If you take the pill for reasons other than contraception — such as for acne, endometriosis, hormonal migraines or unwanted hair growth — this service is not available to you. You will need to see your GP for a prescription in those cases, as these conditions require ongoing medical monitoring.

Are You Eligible?

To protect your health and safety, there are specific criteria you must meet to access this service. Your pharmacist will confirm your eligibility during the consultation.

You are eligible if you:

  • Are aged between 18 and 49 years (inclusive)
  • Are taking a low-risk oral contraceptive pill
  • Have been taking the pill continuously for at least 2 years, as prescribed by a GP or nurse practitioner
  • Are taking the pill primarily for contraception (to prevent pregnancy)

This service may not be for you if you:

  • Are under 18 or over 49 years of age
  • Have been taking the pill for less than 2 years
  • Take the pill for reasons other than contraception
  • Have new or uncontrolled health conditions
  • Have stopped taking the pill for 1 month or more
Ages 40–49: If you're in this age group, your pharmacist can supply one manufacturer's pack of your pill and will refer you to your GP for follow-up. This is because there are additional health considerations for hormonal contraception use in this age group.

If you're not eligible, your pharmacist can still advise on other contraception options and refer you to appropriate care.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your consultation is private, confidential, and will be conducted in a dedicated consultation room. Here are some common questions about what happens during your visit.

What will the pharmacist ask me?
Your pharmacist will ask you about:
  • Your name and date of birth
  • The pill you are currently taking and why
  • When you last spoke to your doctor about the pill
  • Any side effects you may have experienced
  • Your current medical conditions and any other medicines you take (prescription and non-prescription)
  • Lifestyle factors e.g. whether you smoke

Your pharmacist will also take your blood pressure and record your height and weight as part of the health assessment.

Do I need to bring my prescription or pill pack?
You don't need to bring your original prescription, but if you can, please bring a box of your current pill, a past prescription, or any other record showing what you've been taking. This helps the pharmacist confirm the exact brand and dosage of your pill and ensures the correct medication is resupplied.
How is my personal information kept safe?
To receive this service, you'll need to provide your name, date of birth, contact details, and your usual GP's name (if you have one). You'll also need to give your consent for the pharmacist to share your consultation details with your GP.

All information provided during your consultation is stored securely using encrypted digital software and retained for 7 years, in line with NSW Health requirements.
Will my GP be told about my visit?
With your consent, your pharmacist will send a record of your consultation to your usual GP. This helps ensure your primary healthcare team stays informed about your ongoing contraception and overall health. Your pharmacist will ask for your consent before sending any information.
How much does the consultation cost?
A consultation fee may apply. The cost of the pill supplied will be at a private prescription price (it is not PBS-subsidised when supplied without a prescription). Please check with your Chemistworks pharmacist about costs before proceeding. Pricing is transparent and will be discussed with you upfront.
Can the pharmacist give me a different pill to the one I take?
No. The pharmacist can only resupply the pill you are already taking as prescribed by your doctor or nurse practitioner. They cannot switch you to a different type of pill. If there are multiple brands available for your pill type, you can discuss which brand you prefer with your pharmacist.

Still Have Questions?

Can I get the pill at Chemistworks if I'm under 18?
No. This service is only available to those aged 18 to 49. If you're under 18, it's important to have regular check-ins with your GP who will guide you on the best contraceptive option for you and, if appropriate, provide a prescription you can take to the pharmacy.
What are my options if I'm not eligible?
If you don't meet the eligibility criteria, your pharmacist will point you in the right direction. Depending on your situation, they may be able to supply some pills under Continued Dispensing arrangements, or provide emergency contraception if needed. They'll also likely refer you to a GP for a new prescription.
How do I know if this service is right for me?
If you're already established on the pill, are taking it for contraception, and simply need a resupply without the time of a GP appointment, this service could be ideal. If you have any doubts, call us and one of our pharmacists will be happy to chat through your situation before you book in.
Do I still need to see my GP?
Yes. This service is a convenient resupply option, not a replacement for your regular GP relationship. It's important to continue seeing your doctor for routine health checks and whenever your health situation changes. NSW Health recommends discussing your pill with your doctor regularly.
